Eggnog Truffles Recipe (1)

I’m not sure why I love egg nog so much, but I really look forward to it all year long.

Maybe it’s because they make you wait all year to have it.

The other day I went to a potluck Christmas party, and my friend brought these truffles.

They are like big, tasty glass of eggnog with every bite. I begged her for the recipe, and she finally let me have it – and she told me I could share it with you.

Trust me when I say, I can’t make homemade candy for the life of me, because I really can’t.

However, with this recipe, I feel like I could make chocolates for a living because they always turn out perfect.

If you are looking for a delicious and simple holiday treat, you have to try these.

The trick to dipping chocolates and truffles

Dipping chocolates has always been a struggle for me. I feel like I always mess them up, or can’t get the chocolate to look right.

However, we have figured out the best way to dip chocolate, or in this case, egg nog truffles.

All you need is a plastic four prong fork.

Simply break the two middle prongs, so you only have the outside prongs intact. Then place the egg nog truffle into the white chocolate (I just use my hands) roll it around and make sure it is fully coated.

Then, using the two prong fork, lift the egg nog truffle, out of the chocolate, and place it on foil, or prepared baking sheet or pan.

That’s all there is to it.

If it is showing any of the truffle insides, smooth the chocolate over it gently, by sliding the side of the fork prong along it.

Bam. Perfect truffles every time.

How should i store these truffles?

If you are making them in advance, we recommend placing them in an air tight container, and refrigerating them until serving them.

I prefer them cold, but they are also delicious at room temperature.

They also freeze very well.

Depending on how far in advance you are making them, pull them out of the freezer 24 hours in advance, and place them in the fridge to thaw.

If you take them out of the freezer, then put them on the counter, they will get wet, and lose their crisp chocolate texture.

  • ¼ teaspoon imitation rum extract

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, cream together cream cheese, powdered sugar, nutmeg, and rum extract.

  • Refrigerate for about 2 hours or until chilled and slightly more firm.

  • Melt the remaining chocolate.

  2. Blair @ The Seasoned Mom says:

I'm loving everything eggnog right now, and these truffles look amazing! I love the short, simple list of ingredients, too. Pinned!

  3. Kristin says:

Instead of rum extract can I use real rum????

  4. kate says:

Could you use white almond bark or wouldn't that give the same result ?

  5. Cyd says:

Hi Kate, white almond bark will work just fine with these eggnog truffles.

  6. Tina says:

We are having problems rolling ours into balls. Our eggnog mixture is very gooey and sticky. Any advice?

  7. Pam @ The Birch Cottage says:

Tis the season for eggnog. So far, I've made eggnog muffins, eggnog cupcakes and eggnog cookies. Oh, yeah, and let's not forget eggnog frosting! Now I can add eggnog truffles to my list! Thanks for sharing this recipe!

  8. marie says:

Do u have to use rum extract

  9. Cyd says:

It just add to the overall flavor, but they will be fine without it.

  10. Harry says:

Yes try putting the mixture into the frig for 10-15mins than get it out and roll it into balls that should prevent the gooey problem. These were delicious and very tasty I love eggnog.

  11. Jenal Carlton says:

So have you doubled, tripled or quadrupled the recipe? I'm looking for a recipe for a cookie exchange and will need to make more than 12 cookies.

  12. Cyd says:

You could totally double or triple this recipe.

  13. Chivon says:

I'm having difficulties rolling these into balls as well. Very sticky. I've had them in the fridge for 4 or 5 hours now because I found 2 wasn't enough and they're still very sticky. I'm now trying to freeze the mixture to see if that helps but I think the measurements may need to be tweaked for next time.

  14. Mrs. Kelly says:

Do these need to be stored in the fridge once they are done? I would like to gift them, but that can be a challenge for items that require refrigeration.

  15. Cyd says:

I would keep them in the fridge. But if you pull them out to deliver to neighbors or for a party, they should be fine at room temp for a few hours.

  16. Diana says:

How can they be eggnog truffles without eggnog

  17. Cyd says:

It's the nutmeg and other flavors that taste like egg nog in this recipe.

  18. Mellissa Brown-Upton says:

Too gooey & will not firm up!! What do I do??? Catering a party in two days for my boss!!! Help!

  19. Cyd says:

Add a little more powdered sugar if you are having a hard time rolling them into balls. Refrigerate them for storing and that will help them set up too. Hope it all comes together for you!!

FAQs

What kind of alcohol do you put in eggnog? ›

Choose The Right Spirit

While brandy is the most traditional alcohol to pair with eggnog, according to traditional recipes, you can also use a mixture of dark rum and Cognac. If you like your eggnog with more of a kick you can also add bourbon, but we recommend sticking to rum and Cognac to preserve the 'nog's flavors.

How much rum should I put in my eggnog? ›

Aim for a ratio of about five-to-one of eggnog to your selected spirit for the best flavor. For each 8-ounce glass, add one shot (1.5 ounces) of alcohol.

How to make store-bought eggnog better? ›

Shaking eggnog with ice dilutes it just a little. This helps turn the volume down on its inherent sweetness and thins it so it's not tacky thick, and viscous. It gets your eggnog nicely chilled too, which helps the store-bought stuff taste less sticky sweet.

How much brandy to put in eggnog? ›

Add 1/4 to 3/4 cup of liquor per quart of eggnog (starting with the lower amount and adding more as needed). We like spiced rum, bourbon, or brandy best.

What is a good whiskey for eggnog? ›

Made with eggs, sugar, spices, and of course, whiskey, this rich and creamy beverage is sure to get you in the holiday spirit. To make Wigle's spiked eggnog, we recommend using a good quality whiskey like Yule Tidings but other whiskeys will be equally delicious. Wigle PA Bourbon eggnog is also highly recommended!

Why you should be careful with that eggnog? ›

Refrigerated eggs with clean, uncracked shells can still be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. Eggs must be cooked to 160 degrees F to kill bacteria such as Salmonella that may be present. If your eggnog recipe calls for raw eggs, it may not be safe.

Does alcohol make eggnog last longer? ›

Classically, eggnog is also aged with liquor for several weeks (or months!), which sounds insane until you realize that the booze acts as both preservative and sterilizer. Very few bacteria, including salmonella, can survive in the presence of alcohol, as has been proven in lab experiments at Rockefeller University.

Why don t stores sell eggnog year round? ›

Most plants keep producing eggnog through New Year's, and start dumping their unsold product in January. Although associated with the holidays, eggnog doesn't need to be seasonal. Dairy plants could produce small batches of eggnog off-season for hard-core nogheads, but they don't because it's not cost-effective.

Is cognac or brandy better for eggnog? ›

For the most traditional holiday experience, reach for brandy (specifically, Cognac) to spike your 'nog. It's important to note, though, that both brandy and eggnog are quite sweet. Combining them will produce something that someone with a sweet tooth will love, but that others may find cloying. Proceed with caution.

Why is my homemade eggnog so thick? ›

Eggnog Ingredients

Milk and light cream: This traditional eggnog recipe contains milk and light cream. Spices and seasonings: You'll need cinnamon, cloves, vanilla extract, and nutmeg. Egg yolks: Egg yolks thicken the mixture, creating a decadent texture.

How do most people drink eggnog? ›

The brand was created by bartender Martin Wilkes Heron in New Orleans in 1874, using whiskey as the base spirit. Whiskey was replaced by a neutral spirit under the ownership of Brown–Forman.

Is Crown Royal good in eggnog? ›

Egg-cellent Eggnog Tips
