4-D PEOPLE IN SPORTS Most Versatile Performer and the $20,000 first-place prize in the 10-sport contest at Wichita, featuring 20 professional and amateur athletes. Darnell Valentine of the Portland Trail Blazers finished second and received $10,000. The athletes competed in events ranging from bicycling, basketball and racquetball to hill sprints and an obstacle course. Tom Heapes, a spokesman for the event, said at least $10,000 was raised from the event for the American Cancer Society. Quotable Cliff Stoudt, quarterback for the Birmingham Stallions of the United States Football League, found it a bit strange to play in front of an announced crowd of 4,658 fans in the Los Angeles Coliseum.

"It's a little weird when you have to whisper the plays in the huddle." AP Rose treed Clarence Rose has to fire a shot through the branches of a tree in the rough to reach the green on the fourth hole during Sunday's Westchester Classic in Harrison, N.Y. I Ex-fireballer Trucks unloads on players FROM WIRE REPORTS Former pitcher Virgil Trucks says major league baseball players will be making a mistake if they boycott the 1985 All-Star Game over stalled contract talks. Trucks was among several former ballplayers, including Ben Chapman and Norm Zauchin, in Chattanooga over the weekend for- the- Pat Boone-Bethel Celebrity Spectacular golf tournament. "Ninety-five cents of every dollar that comes from that AllStar: Game goes into their pension plan," said Trucks. "They're defeating their own purpose when they strike the All-Star Game.

Trucks, who was a hard-throwing right-hander when he tossed two no hitters for the Detroit Tigers in 1952, has little sympathy for the players' union. if I was an owner and they struck, they would sit there until they starved to death. I'd make them realize they were striking for petty stuff," said Trucks, 66. "They're already getting the money. I don't see how the owners can give them any more than they're giving them.

And I think they're crazy to strike." Chapman and Trucks are unhappy because players are reluctant.to share benefits from the pension plan, which was started in 1946, evenly with the retired players. "The younger players, they don't want to give us nothing," said Trucks, claiming the difference in pension benefits for oldtimers and current players can be as much as $3,000 a month. "They don't even want to see you. They're not a friendly group of ballplayers," said Trucks. "They're all for themselves and nobody else.

They don't care about anybody else." Chapman, Trucks and Zauchin also took issue with the union's opposition to the idea that all major league players should be required to undergo drug testing. "I don't think any more baseball players take drugs than the average insurance man," said Chapman, 76, a lifetime .302 hitter who played in the same outfield with Babe Ruth on the New York Yankees and later managed the Philadephia Phillies. "But I don't buy this argument that one reason a lot of people are taking drugs is pressure. If you need to take drugs or drink whiskey to get out on the field and perform, then you're a lousy athlete." Michael R. Gaebelein, Bedford.

A If Rose breaks Cobb's record this year, he will have accomplished the feat in 23 seasons. Cobb played 24 seasons to set the mark. Cobb was 42 when he stroked hit No. 4,191. Assuming Rose surpasses the mark this year, he will be 44.

Second baseman Alan Wiggins of the San Diego Padres was declared "ready to resume play from a medical yesterday by a panel reviewing his drug-abuse problems. The Joint Review Council, made up by three doctors knowlegeable about drug abuse and set up by major league baseball's Joint Drug Agreement last year, met in New York to determine whether Wiggins was medically able to return to work.

The decision was the panel's first since it was created and came in the face of a decision by Padres President Ballard Smith, who declared that Wiggins would not play for San Diego in 1985 because of his drug problems. The Major League Baseball Players Association, however, said Smith's decision to suspend Wiggins for the season violated the joint drug agreement between the players union and owners. Smith iterated last night that he has no intention of reinstating Wiggins to the club's active roster this season. "Our position is the same as before. We're not going to do anything different.

Nothing has changed. I don't think the Joint Review Council has any authority over the situation." Under the agreement adopted last year no punitive action can be taken against the player if he successfully completes the rehabiliation program and no arrest was involved in the case. Smith said as far he was concerned the Padres had not taken any punitive actions. "We're still paying him," he said. 0 Veteran left-hander Tommy John, who has won 257 games in a big-league career that began in 1963, has been designated for release or assignment by the California Angels.
